Adding Value to Our Youngstown Community
The Salt and Light Company began its formation in November of 2015 when a group of people came together to study God's Word and discuss how to add value to the community of the city of Youngstown. After prayer and discussion The Salt and Light Company resolved to meet weekly to work together on the following tasks:
- Developing projects for the spiritual, educational, and economic improvement of the people of the city of Youngstown.
- Supporting the arts community of the city of Youngstown.
- Teaching and training others to add value to the community of the city of Youngstown.
- Meeting physical and spiritual needs of the community of Youngstown.
A Few Bags of Groceries
Having begun our adventure in November, The Salt and Light Company's first project was gathering grocery items and donating a few bags of groceries to a Youngstown church collecting items to donate to the community for Thanksgiving. It wasn't much, but so we began to meet the physical needs of the community of Youngstown.
A Christmas Breakfast Basket
A well meaning organization just starting out has a whole lot of dreams but not a lot of money with which to accomplish them. Because we found ourselves in this situation we started where we were and used what we had. One of our members knew a single woman who had a child and was facing the holiday season. She asked if we could collect breakfast items so the woman and her child could have a wonderful Christmas breakfast. Salt and Light gladly donated breakfast items and a full basket (with enough items for many breakfasts) was delivered to the woman by our Salt and Light member. We hope this was the first of many times Salt and Light can brighten someone's life with a simple act of kindness.
Socks of Love
In February of 2016 The Salt and Light Company distributed over 100 pairs of warm socks to the homeless community of Youngstown who gather weekly at St. Vincent's Kitchen. A member of Salt & Light was burdened to keep the homeless warm through the winter, and knew that a good pair of socks would contribute greatly to keeping a person warm. Salt and Light went to St. Vincent's Kitchen and directly delivered the socks to those who needed them.
Making an Immediate Difference
On Saturday, April 30th, Salt & Light held a spaghetti dinner at a local Methodist Church that graciously allowed us to use their facilities. All of the proceeds from the dinner sales went to help a young man in immediate need. A member of Salt & Light had a burden for this young man and took the initiative to organize the event. Another of our members prepared the meal and all of Salt & Light helped serve.
What Else Can We Do?
The Salt & Light Company is committed to the task of adding value to the community of Youngstown. We will continue to dream small and dream big--using whatever we have, and doing whatever is necessary to accomplish our tasks of meeting physical and spiritual needs; supporting the arts community; contributing to the spiritual, educational, and economic development of Youngstown; and teaching others to do the same. We will make others aware of our projects by announcing them on this website. Perhaps in the future you can team with us!
